Zygopetalum Louisendorf, possible spike? Male

Just back from two weeks holiday to find the blooms have opened. There are only two blooms on the spike and just one spike on this growth, but happy anyway. There is no scent, unfortunately. I've noticed this new growth is getting black and I don't know what causes this. It feels hard and plump, not rotten. Any idea why this happens?
