Zygonisia Blue Birds
Thought I would share both my happiness and frustration with this little one. Obviously you can't be dissapointed with blooms. But the buds took forever to develop and just before opening, started to show blackish/purple tips on each bud. It's almost like the tip of each bud died/failed to fully develop. You can see it at the tips of each bloom in the pic. Anyone have any ideas on this? I ask, because the 2 new growths coming both already show a spike starting to elongate! That's right, potentially 3 spikes! You know you want to raise the roof!

the zygonesia I have on its re spikes were ill shaped and deformed. I grow mine in the windows. all I have. Do you grow your in the house?
My humidity is very low and I know it causes me bud/bloom troubles on an occasion or 2. I havent re spiked or bloomed much myself. And If I have its deformed in some way or very small and ugly.

The humidity could be a bit of an issue. I dont really have an out/fix though, since I also grow indoors. However, the chid seems pretty happy with how it's going given all the spikes/growths/roots its putting out. If others think it's the humidity, I'll work something out with the incredible outside humidity.

Im getting mixed results for cultures of these plants as some say cool growing others say hot and humid..The zygo is cool the Aganisia is warm and humid grower. They combined the 2 to make a more home friendly orchid. I think is what happens is it grows cool and then needs the warmth and humidity for the buds. Makes sense to me anyway
Ill let ya know how mine turns out. Also have a very similar plant in an Aganax. I treat the same as the Zygo. Its working hard and you might like to see that one
Aganax Evas Blue Amazon = Acacalis cyaneae x Colax jugosus. which is very much the same type of cool/warm hybrid as the zygonesia. Acacalis is Aganisia fyi.

Well the room they stay in is about 70-82 degress on most days. It amy get a bit warmer if it's really hot, as I try to leave the AC off while I'm not at home. The humidity in the house has a much wilder range. Since it's 60+ out side, it stays about 40-60% in here. Those can't be too aweful, but again, I've only flowered it twice now. The first time it did get put outside for awhile, but part of that was to induce flowers and it wasn't so blazing hot.

I love the Evas Blue amazon bloom, but I've heard the plants look terrible. Supposedly they normally lose their leaves shorthly after blooming, so you're left with a bulb with a new growth.
I'll keep you posted on the rest of the blooms and the newer spikes coming. But thanks.

I would bet it is a humidity issue with the buds.

Well I guess humidity will be my next focus for the two coming spikes. Hopefully it'll cool off by the time these last buds drop and I can stick her outside to get the humidity up a bump.

Uppated Pic
In bloom once again, and once again these stupid black markings... I really wish I knew what was causing it, but it seems to mainly happen when blooming in Spring/Summer. Who knows? It's still lovely though. A bit tough to capture the Blue/Violet color, and these flowers really like to cup, but for a guy who likes Phals, this is a nice special plant.

I think there is a bug that sucks the liquid out of your buds that is why the tips are damaged.
A while ago, I posted blooms of my plant:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...lue-birds.html
and here is a picture of the opened blooms
I am a windowsill grower and I followed the culture of Zygopetalum
I also have 30 galon humidifier and small oscillating fans on both sides of the window
