Buying a Lycaste...or 2 Female
Default Buying a Lycaste...or 2

Just wondering if some of the experienced Lycaste growers out there could recommend some of the easier to grow Lycastes for me. I am going on a little buying expedition in a couple of weeks and want to have some idea of what I want (besides everything I see). I only have 1 Lycaste now and it is an aromatica and I'm doing ok with it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I find Ida frimbriata (or whatever it is called now) an easy grower along with the Lyc aromatica in my conditions. Also Lyc. Spectabilis and Lyc. skinneri from Paramount grows and flowers very well for me too.

Brenda, thank you for the reference to Mario Ferrusi on OSF. I forgot about him. Mario? Doesn't he come South? I met the Kennedys in DC in 2009 and purchased plants.

Any of the yellow Lycastes are relatively easy for me, including Lyc cruenta. Cruenta is supposedly an intermediate/cool grower which is how I grow it while the plant is indoors. It's been outside since April and will remain out there 'til some time in October when the temp dives into the 30s F. Maryland is anything but cool during June - September. The plant doesn't mind and it seems that the hybrid Lyc Concentration doesn't mind, either.

Have fun at the WOC! I went to the last one in Miami. Did you attend that one, too?

He very well might Stitz, he is a judge as well as a grower/seller....so I'm sure he's travelled a fair bit through the US.

We have very hot, humid summers as well.

Thanks I'm sure I will....not a very good traveler...so this is huge for me...also doing 1 week after in China seeing some sights? No, I've never been to WOC...not sure why I'm picking my first one across the globe!!!
