Of coarse, this is the Maxillaria that everyone has! My little guy is growing in hapu'u (similar to tree fern) and has been on the ground so long that the roots are now holding it to the ground! As most of you know, the coconut scent is just amazing. Enjoy!

Very nice Steve. I'm not that familiar with it but I have seen one around here at nurseries that they call coconut orchid and from your description, I guess that's it.
I wanna make sure I understand this. You grow it on hapu'u (tree fern like) which you then laid on the ground and then the roots after attaching themselves to the hapu'u have grown INTO the ground? Or are they grabbing the surface?
Stupid question but I had to ask?

The roots have grown into the ground. Actually, any orchid you leave on the ground for long enough will do that. I actually have a Laelia purpurata, L. purpurata hybrid, Peristaria elata, etc. that grow into the ground.

Very nice! That is one of my favorite orchids and I'm ashamed to say that I don't own one yet. I fell head over heels in love with it the day I actually smelled one. It was a giant specimen plant at an orchid show. You could smell the plant from pretty far away, and sticking my nose right in it was heaven!

Very cool how it's growing! Isn't it going to be a bit tricky the day you need to repot it? You'll have to convince it to let you of the ground!

Who says I'm going to repot it?!

I think if I move, then I'll just have to pull it out of the ground though.

Just bought a little one this past weekend, it has one little flower. The spray is so pretty to look at without a flower, I would have bought it anyway. About how old is yours? Tks C.

I've had mine for a few years now and quite honestly, for the size of the plant I expect more blooms. I'm guessing that rather than one large plant, I actually have several young plants in one pot. To your exact question though, I really have no idea how old it is.
