Mel, You have one tuff cat who chooses to chew/ignore Bitter Apple!

Re: Zygopetalums, I have a number of differences with the Basic Z Culture from Casa. Where are you located? That will help this discussion.

My greatest difference with the Casa recommendations is the potting media that I choose to use. My selection is the classic "Off" mix for standard Cattleyas. It contains much larger sized fir bark mixed with other ingredients. This works very well with the conditions that I provide.

I don't do well with many orchids. Phalaenopsis don't fare well here. I don't maintain the conditions which guarantee their best performance.

I live in York Pa and grow in a southern facing window. Have a humidifier on the furnance to keep the air less dry in winter. My catts and phals are doing wonderful, the phals are behind a shear to avoid burning. My Zygo sits behind my catts but still gets good light. This is my first try at 3 new types of orchids. The Zygo, a Massie and a Brassia.

Thanks for the update. I understand your conditions now I'm in Rockville. I also have the humidification added into my furnace.

From the foto, it appears that your Zygo is a hybrid. Does your plant have an ID tag? That info is important, if it's available, to determining your best strategy.

Bluebird is helpful!

Through a search of various sources, I suggest that you make further inquiry at:

Walter Off & Waldor Orchids,
10 E Poplar Ave, Linwood, NJ 08221-2526|
(609) 927-4126

Waldor exhibited a plant at the 2007 Philadelphia Flower Show which has flowers appearing similar to yours:
Zygopabstia Woodlandsense 'Blue Bird' won an award, HCC/AOS

Remember my reference yesterday to an old-timey Cattleya mix that I use for some of my Zygopetalum plants, the "Off" mix? Guess what!
