Hey, Gloria if you were near me I'd gladly give you a piece. It is large enough to be divided in two good pieces !

Mauro, Do you know where I can get precise descriptions of the various Zygopetalum species? I'm looking for the accepted version used by taxonomists, I guess. If I need to dissect the flowers, so be it!

I am weary of seeing fotos of Z. mackayi and Z. crinitum mixed together and called the same thing, let alone intermedium vs maculatum! I hope to see something that clearly defines these two as well as brachypetalum, intermedium, pabstii et al.

I would like to accurately explain the differences to others.

I understand that there is even some disagreement within Brasil. Many years ago, Alvim Seidel wrote me that many people within your country also misidentify the various species!

After many years of looking, I only recently stumbled upon a foto labeled Z. pabstii. It was quite a shocker. I look forward to blooming my single plant!! It's BS however, it hasn't yet cooperated after 2+ years.

The best place to look for info on Brazilian species of Zygopetalum is Flora Brasilica, Stitz. F.C. Hoehne was and still is one of the most respected taxonomists for his monumental work, especially on orchids. Volume XII of his Flora Brasilica, pp 95-115, brings detailed info on Zygopetalum species, with pp 99-100 bringing a key for those known by then (1950). Also, several varieties inside species are mentioned and this is of great help for the identification job. Since that time just a few new species have been described and this fact still makes Flora Brasilica the best place to look for info on this genus. The book has been written in Portuguese and I don't know whether it is availabe in English, or not. Species included in the key are Z. mosenianum Barb. Rodr, maxillare Lodd., graminifolium Rolfe, sellowii Reichb. f., microphytum Barb. Rodr., crinitum Lodd., mackayi Hook., intermedium Lodd., bolivianum Schltr., brachypetalum Lindl., burkey Reichb. f. and triste Barb. Rodr.

Thanks, Mauro. I will look for your referenced material. My local orchid society has a good library; I will start there.

I have found Portuguese to be a challenging language to translate on my own, except for Carlos Gomes--his writing translates easily. I use Yahoo! Babel Fish - Text Translation and Web Page Translation .

People say that Portuguese is really a difficult language to deal with, but I don't know why I don't feel so... !(kidding!). Anyway, if you have any specific difficulty translating it, let me know and I'll try to help.

Mauro,
I borrowed two books from the local OS library:

Iconografia de Orchidaceas do Brasil, Hoehne, 1949, Sao Paulo

Orchidaceae Brasilienses, Band II, Pabst & Dungs, 1977, Germany

I'm already familiar with the Pabst book. There are detailed drawings. I hope that the Hoehne book has what I'm searching. It isn't precisely what you recommended; it's close!
