Default Zygo spiking habit

I have a Galeopetalum Starburst 'Parkside' that I got about 2 years ago. I may not be the best caretaker, because I think it's just now doing the 2nd PB since I bought it (and I thought it typically bloomed more than once a year). I know I've let it get a little drier than I should, but the PBs always plump back up.
Anyway, this is my first flowering (it was in flower shortly after I got in 3/22) and the new PB only started showing Nov or Dec and due to being on a cold back porch, it's progressed slowly...however, the leaves are just now opening and while watering, I was surprised to see a flower bud coming out of the base of the new growth. I was under the impression that the leaves would fully open before it would spike? Is this another case of it does what it wants or am I just wrong

I had a quick google to see what this bloom would look like - wow! She is beautiful!

This Australian store suggests the following.

Galeopetalum Starburst 'Parkside'

Well that's pretty much what I'm observing...guess I just made the wrong assumption. It happens a lot...I had thought this was Jumping Jack Flash vs his progeny (memory..what can I say).

Just noticed OB lists Zygos with Maxillarias - they aren't very closely related. Both are in the Cymbidium tribe, Cymbidieae. Zygos are in subtribe Zygopetalinae and Maxillaria in subtribe Oncidiinae.

That's possibly why I always forget where OB puts them (had to look today).

The groupings on OB deviate from currently accepted relationships (and breeding groups) quite a bit. Why lumping Catasetums (which are Cymbidae) with Stanhopea (related to the Maxillaria/Zygopetaum/Lycaste groups) no idea. So no worries... probably reflected the knowledge at the time.
