We have a freeze warning tonight, low should be around 23-28F. We had to winterize our chicken coop today, ladies all tucked in snug tonight. Outdoor plants will have to deal. I’m glad weather like this is rare here.

I still wasn't clear, sorry. Read carefully through each post in the thread I linked. RJSquirrel addresses most of the questions but it is one little fact per post.

He pots the plant in a net pot with sphagnum. The undrilled bowl has a layer of LECA on the bottom, and moss above that. The net pot exactly fits the mouth of the bowl, and he says this is important, so as not to leave a gap for evaporation. The moss in the bowl is moist but not soggy. He adds water so there is a visible layer of water in the LECA at night, when it's cooler, but the water level is below the moss. During the day the water warms and moves up into the sphagnum in the bowl. He only rarely needs to add water. He spritzes the base of the plant with a dilute fertilizer solution daily or almost daily.

{{sigh}} Well, thanks for enabling me estación seca. And yes, Jeff, regarding your query on another thread, of course you know what my new plant(s) is.

I got Max rodrigueziana (spotted) and as a "filler" for my shipping Max lepidota. Both six inch baskets. Due to ship Tuesday.

Can anyone explain the rationale orchid addicts have about "saving money" by buying a second plant to even out that same shipping cost over two plants?

I wasn't going to, but husband "insisted." He says, "Look at all the money I spend on tack (for horses). That's the cost of a good bit. Which, by the way I'll be ordering one at first of month when check comes in." It made the decision just a tad bit easier.

I swear...that guy buys tack like I buy...ummm...orchids?

After I saw the horse show Cavalia I telephoned my horse widower brother and jokingly told him I wanted horses. He told me I could have his wife's horses free if I promised never to tell her what happened.

oooh M. lepidota looks cool too. Good picks.

Hopefully it's warm enough to ship to Kansas next week? It's been near freezing at night, even in SD. Slightly warming up now.

Meh, I think they’ll be fine. Orchids are tough!! LOL… at least if I’m gonna grow them they better be!

That's a really great looking plant!! I like it very much (enough to want one for mysef) and it seems rather compact.

A couple years ago there were a few members that went through a majot Maxillaria phase and purchased many very small and very cute species. Sadly this genus is not that easy to find in Europe other than Max. tenuifolia and a couple other common species.

Okay guys... Ahem... I don't consider Maxillaria rodrigueziana as a small or "compact" plant now that it's arrived. I want to know how you made it appear to be small in your pictures Jeff.

Camille, I know your plant space situation and you definitely don't need the rodrigueziana!

They arrived a couple of days ago. The lepidota was a 4" basket, the rodrigueziana a 6" basket. Note door stop and steak knife for perspective here folks...

Now I'm trying to find a vessel that I can use for the RJSquirrel method. I'm kinda stupified and a little nervous now...

Thanks for the heads up WW, that it definitely NOT a compact plant! Probably wouldn't even fit under the lights, even on the shelf with the most head room.

Those are super large and healthy plants though, and seems like a great vendor!

I'm eyeing a Maxillaria coccinea now, but am not sure of the size or the suitability of my growing environment. So I'm going to do some research until the weather warms up enough to start ordering online again.
