Hello all!
After stamping down my urge to get into a new hobby all summer, yesterday I caved in and bought my first orchid...ten days before I have to pack up and move!
Despite my chronic lack of a green thumb or any space outside a small apartment, that doesn't stop me from dabbling in all sorts of houseplant endeavors. So far my succulents and cacti are the only things that have flourished in the long term, but I love the experience of learning new things along the way even if I don't stick with it to the end. If I achieve nothing else, I want to make at least one orchid re-flower.
I've posted around a little, thanks to the ID forum I know my first orchid is some sort of no ID Oncidium intergeneric that looks similar to a Pacific Sunspot. It was free! I've nicknamed it Kiki after a webshow character I love with a similar color scheme.
As luck would have it, my local orchid growing society in central Iowa is hosting its annual all-day event with speakers and sales and a show...NEXT WEEKEND! I can't believe my timing and I'm excited to see some of the community.
