Default Hello from Maryland!

Hi Everybody! I just ran across this board and just HAD to join - can't wait to go exploring here now that I'm registered... I saw so many great pics and posts while I was waiting for my confirmation email!

A bit about me: I'm in MD, I grow most of my orchids in my 14' x 24' greenhouse, but some indoors, too - I have mostly catts, oncidiums, paphs, phals, dendrobiums, and phrags, but I have a few oddballs of misc. genera... I also grow hoyas and nepenthes, along with some other hard to find collectible tropicals. I'm an African violet nut, too.

I'm currently on a miniature orchid kick tho. Just came back from the MOS show/sale a week ago with a whole bunch of minis - its SO hard to get out of those sales without breaking the bank!!!

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Kathy

Hello from Maryland! Female
Default New to this forum and to Maryland

Hi all,

I have a question for baybreeze (or anyone else who may have a thought).

We just moved to Maryland from Arizona. I love orchids and I have to say that my dendrobiums did very well in Arizona---but my cymbidiums did not...I have a dorathy stockstill that I have had for about 3 or 4 years that has not bloomed once and is nearly on deaths door from root rot. It has perked up a lot since we have moved here though. (keeping my fingers crossed)

At any rate my question is, baybreeze--what do you use for substrate here in Maryland, or rather what do find works best here. Oh I should mention that we are in the Chesapeake bay area as well.

When we were on the road i put all of my orchids (bare root) in a big sweater box with some floral foam and styrafoam just to cover the roots. I kept just enough water in there to keep the humidity up. so it was hot muggy days in the sweater box in the car, with the lid just cracked open; and very cool hotel air conditioning at nite with the sweater box lid open.

I have to tell you that all of my orchids perked up so nicely durring that time, I have been concidering keeping them bare root. But I do not want to keep them in bark since it is so humid here and already I have had problems with root rot in arizona.

Thank you for any comments or suggestions
Angel
