Default Hello! Wish me luck with my new plants!

Hello! Just got my first orchids (moth orchids) and hoping with all my heart not to kill them! Read the really nice sticky with Phal abuse ends now - many thanks! Following that I repotted them (have 3) and now hope they stay alive. A lot of info to take in but great to have people to ask questions as I stumble through growing these pretty flowers. I did not plan to buy them, they were just too pretty when I accidentally happened to visit the botanical garden during the annual exhibit of the local orchid society So how could I resist?

Welcome to the Orchid Board. You've come to the right place to learn all about orchids. You should know they can be quite addicting, though!

Default Thank you!

Thank you! I noticed! I was not supposed to buy even one that day - I ended up with 3 - and thinking that some of the hanging ones would look lovely next to these ones I just got a new house too though so that’s ok. They can take over. So long as they don’t die and are happy. I Want to get comfortable with taking care of these 3 and maybe do a bit more research on what types would be ok on a tropical island before getting more though. I’m afraid it was an impulse buy and I’m doing this backwards - researching after I bought them

Welcome to the board. I'll bet you will do just fine. I think most of us have done it this way.

Welcome!

I'm pretty sure you will have native orchids on your islands. Try to find a native plant society or orchid society to teach you more.

And there are a number of orchid nurseries in the Caribbean. I think there is a big one on Jamaica.

Orchids native to the Caribbean that should do really well for you include Broughtonia, Dimerandra, Encyclia and Tolumnia. The moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) should also do well, in the shade.

Hi welcome As a fellow new memeber I hope your orchid does better than mine as it's doing quite badly. I hope one day I might be able to help you one day as I learn more, but for now I'm still a noob.

Thank you! I found the orchid society here like you suggested and really appreciate the suggestions for new plants that would do well here. I’ll make sure I can take good care of these ones, but then I think I might buy some of those as well
