Default Hello from Canada! (long-time lurker)

Hello everyone, I've always found myself on these forums when looking for orchid culture tips, but I'm very shy... I only just decided to create an account on here after much teetering and hesitation! I'm looking forward to meeting other orchid lovers!

I've been obsessed with orchids since I was little, I can't even remember when it started! But sadly I never got to try my hand at growing them as seriously as I would have liked because of university, having to move cities often, budget etc...

But I recently found my own space to start expanding my little collection of rescue plants! I'm starting out small, mostly Dendrobiums for now, a few Phalaenopsis and Cymbidiums, a Vanilla vine cutting, as well as adding a few more plants soon hopefully...

I'm very excited, so I figured I would join this forum! I live in Vancouver (just moved there) but I'm used to much warmer climates than this, so my current learning curve is to do with creating an adequate indoor space for my plants... I guess I'll be looking at the 'Growing Under Lights' and 'Terrarium Gardening' sections quite a bit, as I don't get nearly as much sunlight as I'd like here! I'm looking into a sort of mini-indoor greenhouse set up, does anyone know which section of the forum might be a good place to look or ask?

Anyways, it's nice to meet you all!

Hello and welcome! It is great to have you here! I lurked quite a long time before joining, too, and then lurked a little longer before actually posting.

Welcome to Orchidboard!

I understand the entire moving around/university/budget thing, I got into growing as a freshly minted college student, and all those factors made orchid growing a very difficult hobby. My 3rd and 4th years were hell, I was doing a double degree (courses in france and netherlands), and 2 internships in that time. I was in a different place every 2-3 months. No driving license or car, so I will let you imagine what I looked like in the trains hauling all my possessions in a large suitcase, with also a hiking backpack, my laptop, and very two large bags full of orchids... It was hell. Then during my master's degree I was in one place for 2 years, and could finally develop my orchid collection a bit (within the restrictions of a student budget of course). Glad those days are behind me now!

If you can't find what you are looking for in the forums, or still have questions don't hesitate to ask for help! Depending on what you are growing you don't necessarily need an enclosed greenhouse type set up. Many people use shelves with lights on them, and for humidity loving orchids people set up nice terrarium/orchidariums.
