Hi. I'm new (since Nov 2016) to orchids, and even newer to this OB; wish I'd stopped over Here before listening to "advice" on YouTube channels! Maybe I wouldn't have already killed 5 (already ill) orchids...with a chance of further deaths coming up 😢

I used to have all sorts of houseplants and aqauarium plants...and all did Superb, even when others in my same area could not grow them. But then I got away from plants for a number of years...and moved from VA to TX and now am here in OH. And from a house with lots of growing options...to an apartment with extremely limited ones. That, and never caring for Orchids at all, has been part of the issue.

I did do my due diligence of at least Trying to learn new info and how I might apply it to my own growing situation in my appt. But somehow I've misapplied it, missed something, and am learning that some things I thought I understood to be "good" or at least "ok" can actually be harmful. Maybe even what caused my orchids' demise. (Like overuse of cinnamon. Spraying roots with H2O2. Changing mediums Too much; in an attempt to rescue from, may have actually hastened Orchid deaths)

Maybe I'll put a pictoral time line of all I've tried since Nov on my profile...but in the meantime I'll post my Current situation under illness and disease or somewhere and see if you guys can help me start/restart from scratch.

Been reading as many threads as possible here on the Board and finding it very helpful...though perhaps too late for my current rescue attempts.

Thanks!

The more I think I know, the more I think I don't know anything at all!

Thanks, leafmite! Another Ohioan. 😬

I knew about the society but can't make their meetings. But maybe they have individuals who'd be willing to meet at other times. Thanks for the reminder.

Welcome to the forum. Goodness you have moved all over the country. Don't worry we have all killed our fare share. That's how I came to the board as well. This is a great place to learn, and you will.

I am with you. As every advice in Youtube or here are based on personal experience is hard to get a definitive answer.
Nothing like your own experience based on your local conditions, albeit the dead orchids.

I started with IKEA orchids, I realized that Miltoniopsis do not work with the conditions I have. Phals and Oncidiums are ok.

Just added more light and a Brassia bloomed for the first time.

Changing too many variables at the same time won't help you in understanding what is going on.

Thanks Shannon and murf7. I appreciate everyone's help and encouragement...esp with a kinda (mostly my fault) rocky start 🙄

Welcome aboard! It's good to have you with us. Where in Ohio? I'm originally from Elyria, though have lived most of my life as a Southerner.

Dead orchids have been some of my best teachers.
