Like John, I'm certain much of what I write here isn't up-to-par in that regard, but we all seem to be OK with that.
Sometime, some of the gaffs are hilarious. There was a newscaster in Philly that was dead serious about a case in which someone had shot and killed his neighbor's dogs, then promptly identified the species as "Portuguese Mountain Lions."

My pet peeve is the use of the term "extinct in _________"
when used by professional writers. Extinction is an absolute, like pregnancy. You either are or you aren't. Professionals who make their living with words should eschew the hyperbole that "extinct" stirs up when misused, and learn the word "extirpated"!
