Just a thought: what about putting onion net bags around each pot and just lightly fastening them together at the top. That might keep the bark from spilling or floating off.

I was think of doing this with a finer mesh type of bag. Last summer a slug came in from outside on one of my plants. Almost threw the whole damn plant off the balcony. I know, I know.... but they're so slimy... Anyways, think a fine mesh could keep a slug out and bark in at the same time?

They can make themselves pretty small. But, I hate them too. Ick

I never had trouble with snails until I put my plants on a table. I always put them on a wire baker's rack and had no intruders..

put a saucer of beer out that will keep them off the plants. or some slug pellets around the table legs.
