Hello,
I am Judy from northern Illinois. I inherited a few orchids from my dad. Bitten by the bug, I bought a few more. Now I just want to learn what I need to keep them alive.

I have phals, dendrobiums, cattleyas, cymbidiums, onccidiums, and a vanda. Some are blooming size, others just seedlings.

I appreciate this board where I can glean info and ask questions. Thank you!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Northern Illinois means not far from Orchids by Hausermann.... I wish I could go to their open house, this weekend and the next....

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Just the thought of being within a 200-mile drive of Hausermann's this weekend has my poor credit card quivering in fear! If you can get there, do. Take lots of money.

You've put together what sounds like an interesting collection! Some that you have will want different conditions from others. For example, most Vandas want light, and lots of it. Most Cattleyas want almost as much light but not full sun. Phalaenopsis will happily grow in a breezy spot where there's plenty of shade. All three like to be warm.

Oh, guys, I'm going there tomorrow...Na, na, na. Welcome Judy! How Northern are you?
Actually, it's Monday. I'm a day off...Sorry, Leafmite...I had to order a new Baker's rack for my babies, so no real sympathy.

If you don't take and post lots of photos, it's grape soda and rum for you for the next two weeks.

Alright, Dollythehun, that is not fair! I had to comfort myself by buying another orchid off of amazon!

Hello and welcome Dewie7! It is great to have you join us here! Yes, if you can make it to Hausermann's, that would definitely be the place to be! I get their mailings and there is a discount on orchids bought there during the open house. Unfortunately, they no longer extend the discount or sale orchids to orchids bought online.

Welcome, Judy.
You need a Paph and a Zigo in your collection.

I think people in the Midwest do well with jewel orchids, too.
