Default John from Alabama

Hello, I'm John from Alex City, Alabama . I'm new to orchids but in love with these guys! Especially the smaller or minis. Don't think I'll ever learn all the types. or pronounce them correctly though.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Nobody knows how ancient Greek and Latin were actually pronounced. We can't find anybody who was alive back then to teach us. Scholars have made educated guesses. The "official" pronunciations some orchid societies publish have made Latin scholars I know laugh out loud. All the professors of botany I've met have agreed that any pronunciation other people can understand is just fine.

Welcome,John. I took Latin...It helps to understand what words mean...and that is it. You can pick up an inexpensive book on plant names, if it bothers you too much.😄

Welcome, John, from another John. I'm just across the border near Atlanta, and also love minis (and can't pronounce them, either).

Peach State Orchids is nearby, in Kennesaw. It's OK, though nothing special. Show-wise, about all that's going on is the Orchid Days presentation at the Atlanta Botanical Society - always worth a visit! Drop me a line if you're coming this way!
