Hello OrchidBoard, I'm...
Hi everyone!
I saw the thread about not being shy about introductions, so... here I am! I'm 19 years old, in my second year of university, and I've been learning about/in love with orchids for about four years now. My grandmother had a greenhouse with quite a large collection. Once she passed away, we moved into her house and the responsibility of taking care of the orchids fell to me. For the first few years, I didn't pay too much attention to them. Unfortunately, I lost a few orchids in that time. I think that the original collection contained about 40 orchids. Once phals started gaining popularity in grocery stores, I started buying my own orchids. A few years later, orchid shows and nursery days came into the picture. I'm pretty much full-on obsessed now! My collection is 60 orchids strong (most of them being no-IDs, unfortunately, since I lost many tags in the years when I didn't care about the collection). I'd consider myself a novice, finally cuing into growth cycles and specific cultural requirements. Any advice would be appreciated as we go along! Let's get to know each other!
Sincerely,
Liva

Welcome!!!! I'm always excited to see people my age who are into orchids, and from Canada as well! I started when I was 15 and have been devotedly pouring my energy into learning all that I can about orchids! Considering that you're in Toronto, if you ever get the chance, Cloud's Orchids in Jordan Station would be a great place for you to visit when they have an open house. I've ordered from them many times and their plants are always top notch quality. I know university can get busy, but have you looked into joining a local orchid society? Besides the forum here, orchid societies are always a great place to learn more about orchids, meet local growers, and also expand your collection! And I must say, I am jealous that you have a greenhouse to grow in! I'm sure many of us would love to see pictures.

Are you a fan of coincidences? Because get ready.... drumroll....
My family LIVES in Jordan Station! And I visited Cloud's Orchids YESTERDAY! I purchased two plants, Encyclia Cochleata and Howeara Lava Burst 'Pacific Sunrise'. The first is already blooming, and the second should be in about a month or so!
I've only managed to stop by the nursery twice so far, but I agree, they really do have quality plants.
In regards to posting pictures, I think that I have to start a few more threads on the forum before I'm able to? But until then, check out my instagram! @the.joy.of.orchids
Thank you so much for the warm welcome

Haha, fancy that!!! I am jealous that you are able to visit an orchid retailer in person. I've been dreaming of that opportunity for ages. I checked out your IG, and I see that you already have had some nice plants bloom for you!
