Hello - Orchid Board

Hi,

I am former orchid enthusiast (I had kids in the interim) and looking to get back into the hobby, albeit in a slightly different way - this time at the office. I work on the 37th floor with east facing windows. I would like to try to grow orchids on the windowsill but was curious if this was possible. I have grown on windowsills before (when I first got into the hobby, this is where I began with humidity trays, etc.). I wasn't sure if the windows in skyscrapers were treated in a way that would block some of the spectrum of light needed to allow certain orchids from blooming. I currently have a phalaenopsis that was bought with spikes. it seems to be doing well (i have it placed in a way that it gets filtered light). I would love to get a humidity tray and start expanding my (soon to be) collection. I was thinking about compact cattleyas. Before I start spending, however, I would love some input about growing in a skyscraper window. Thanks very much!

We all learn from our orchid mistakes and some of us make plenty in terms of resulting plant loss. That is how we gain experience. happy to share any past mistakes and possible solutions. It is a fantastic hobby and this is a great site for support and knowledge

Hello and welcome! I cannot advise on the growing in a skyscraper but hopefully someone else can advise you. I have heard of both figs and passion fruit being grown in the windows of skyscapers so I am pretty certain it is possible to grow orchids there, too. Good luck!

I don't have any advice about growing in a skyscraper either, but at least you have a window. It takes about 25 years at my work to get enough seniority to get a window, and I've only been there 12 years.

One of the people with a window grows so many amazing plants in her office, but she's not into orchids, so I can't even ask her.

Ha. They did the building backwards here. Offices in the middle. The grunts get the windows. I am in no hurry to get promoted.
