Default Hey! from Kansas City

Hey everyone! I am a new orchid grower and have been soaking in any information I can get my hands on. I have grown my collection quickly only limiting it by restricting myself to one new orchid per month! That is possibly the hardest thing about it so far. I have 4 'no id' phals that I bought from a "big box" store at steep discounts, 1 'no id' mini phal, a Brassia Arcuigera Rchb.f 1869, Zygopetalum 'Artur Elle' Wichmann Orch. 1969, Monnierara Millennium Magic 'Witchcraft' AM/AOS, Paph. Chamberlainianum 'Mt. View' x Paph. Haynaldianum 'Long Life', and a Paph Wellesleyanum FMA Alba x In- Charm White. By far my favorite is the paphs. I buy my orchids based on the fragrance and also the proportion of flower to foliage. I don't know why, but if there is too much foliage and little flowers then i'll skip over them for something with showier flowers and stronger scent.

Hello and welcome!

I prefer fragrant orchids, too, and most of my collection is fragrant. Some of my small orchids with small flowers have surprisingly great perfume. You just never know.

Are your Paphs fragrant?

No, unfortunantly not. They and a few others are exceptions because of their flowers and unique features.

I understand that. I have a few that are not fragrant, too, but were irresistible to me (i.e. Lepanthopsis astrophora 'Stalky').

Good luck with your orchids and great to have you here!

Hello and welcome! I used to live in KC area for 11 years, small world. We lived in Olathe and Overland Park and loved it. Best bar b q anywhere! Sure miss Smoke Stack.

I grow miniatures and if they happen to be fragrant that is a nice plus for me.

I was just at the local orchid shop today and they had a bunch of new miniatures. They are so neat.

Yes, it is very inconveniently, and by that I mean conveniently, located on my drive home from work so it is quite easy to slip in to check out their new arrivals.
