Hello from a house plant torturer!
Default Hello from a house plant torturer!

Hello!

I've always loved plants but only recently become interested in orchids. My main interest is in the garden and whilst I can tend to the whims of the most picky plant there, I somehow manage to do in most houseplants sooner or later!

Hence the (currently) few orchids I grow tend to be those which can spend most or all of the year outdoors. So far:
  • Bletilla striata, several clumps which I keep moving trying to find the right place (they don't enjoy it but still flower)
  • Clanthe Kozu hybrid - new acquisition this year, not planted yet
  • Stenoglottis longifolia - had for a couple of years, quite a nice clump now.
  • Cymbidium - NoID red hybrid
  • Phalaenopsis - NoID white mini, seems happy enough. Thinking of mounting it but we'll see.
  • Disa uniflora (deceased) - was grown in Sphagnum moss which went all slimy, by the time I noticed it was too late. Might try again in different media as they are so nice.

All of these are still enjoying the sun (jk lol) outdoors and will come in in a month or so.

Looking forward to absorbing some expert knowledge! Any suggestions for (semi-)hardy orchids, or easy shade-tolerant indoor ones much appreciated! I'm quite interested in some of the smaller Cymbidium spp. like goeringii or ensifolium.

Nice, you must have some nice weather in your area. Welcome to the OrchidBoard. Always fun to see how people grow their orchids outdoors

I take it you've not been to the UK!

Our weather is mainly maritime - so not much heat in summer (rarely above 25 C) and long, cool winters (no heat in the sun at this latitude means even when it's sunny it doesn't warm the air). On the plus side it means we don't get mega cold like you do - usually first frost is Nov or Dec, and the lowest it's got in the last 5 years is -6. Sorry, don't know what this are in F.

Just noticed I forgot to say that the Phal isn't outdoors!

Also overwintering space! Which I don't have so hopefully that should help curb my enthusiasm! The only one I have cost £2!

Nope, I have never been. However, I am guessing damp, cool, and shady. I think I like it.
