Smile Hello from Hedge

Hi there, finally worked out how to do this, just wanted to say hello as I am very new here. I have a dozen orchids at the moment, they are a new craze, and are having to compete with my cacti and succulents and pelargoniums! I can't work out what zone my part of England is , does anyone know how to find out? Needless to say it is currently below freezing outside, (7.20 pm GMT) and only got up to 40 F all day but in the summer it can reach mid 80's F. Looking forward to asking lots of really stupid questions so please be patient with me!

Welcome Hedge! I have also struggled between cacti and orchids and finally gave up on cacti as they are too finicky! I'm down to about 7 species from over 200. (Seems strange, eh?) Some of your fellow Brits will help with the zone thingy, I am sure. Lots of help here, just ask away and don't forget to create a gallery so you can share your pics. Cacti are OK also (just post under "off topic") There aren't many of us growing cacti as well as orchids.

Thanks, Dorothy, looks like I'm in Zone 8a which is quite warm actually! here in the gulf stream we forget how cold the continental effect is. Not that I'll be leaving any houseplants outdoors, it is often far too wet for the few that could cope with the cold. Thanks again

Hi Hedge...welcome to the best forum around!

Don't be surprised if you find yourself easing your other plants out of your house in order to make room for more 'chids...it will most likely happen at some point

If we can help you in any way, please let us know.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to say hello! Can anyone tell me why my blog (such as it is ) ended up on the articles? Isn't there just a general blogspot - which is where I thought I was when I wrote it!!!
