Hello everyone,
We are in a blizzard here in central Wisconsin and it is a treat to be able to join this group and see pictures of your beautiful orchids. I have had orchids for about 8 years or so. Last event I went to was in MN at the Winter Carnival. I purchased several orchids and so today I am enjoying their beautiful fragrance and blooms! I am here to learn alot more about growing orchids. I wish there was someone close to where I live who also shares my passion for these beautiful flowers but I don't know of anyone. Maybe there is someone on here???
Marlene

Hi Marlene Welcome to the OB

I feel your pain about the blizzards. We've been getting a few of those too. What kinds of orchids do you grow? Do you have any pictures? We like pictures

Hope you enjoy it on the OB

Default Wisconsin member & reply to Sara

Hello,
Sara which part of WI are you located? I am in Central.

What do you folks use to get rid of mealy bugs, I guess they are called, white cotteny sticky things that are located deep in the leaves of a orchid? I have tried a veg & garden spray thinking it is safe for the orchid but the little white things are still there. Please help! Thanks.

If you only have one orchid with these little nasty critters on it, take a tooth pick and pluck them out. This is a simple way of getting rid of the adult mealy's, so now we have to focus on the babys(most of wich we can't see). For sprays you can use alot of different things. I use either Safers insecticidal soap, Neem oil or strait up 409. All work well for killing all sorts of critters and all are safe to spray on the orchid as long as you don't mix them together. Lately I have been prefering the 409, but neem oil has a much more lasting effect. Which ever one you choose to use, completely drench the entire plant and potting media till it runs out of the bottom. It may take a few aplications to completely get rid of the infestation.

Marlene - I'm in between Stevens Point and Appleton if that helps you out at all. I have not yet had a problem with any insects, so I am of no help there sorry!
