Default Hi Ya'll~Newbie from Texas~~

Hi to everyone here, my real name is De'Andrea. I live on the edge of West Texas about 65 miles north of Abilene. That's about 200 miles west of the Dallas/Ft Worth area.

I just joined very early this morning while at work. My hubby & I are correctional officers at a maximum security prison unit close to Abilene. We have been there for 10 yrs now working the night shift. Hubby will retire some time this yr. I will strive for retirement in about 5 yrs. We have one son & daughter-n-law who live in Alaska along with our 5 grandkitties, grandhamster & grandchinchilla. (Daughter-n-law isn't able to have human kids)

I became a new orchid Mom recently. I have 6 at the present time and yes like many here as I have already read, I am ever on the lookout for another "orchid child" to add to my nest. All 6 of my recent purchases were from local chain stores. They are all Phalaenopsis of varying colors. I have been eyeing some of the more ~advanced in keeping~ species online. I'm pretty sure at some time in the future a few of them will find their way to my door.

My other hobbies are my dogs, parrots for the moment (health issues are prompting me to find homes for my feathered friends) and my weaving & spinning (amateur stage with this still). I did a Google search to find this forum, read several threads and thought how nice and comfortable this place feels. I will be doing a lot of reading here on the great info ya'll offer to us newbies. I have done a lot of watching videos lately too on the proper care of orchids. Some of the videos I must say I can already tell I won't be following their advice, many are very helpful.

Thanks for having me here and to everyone!

Had to come back here and reveal that the obsession for more orchids has already grabbed me. Last night after I posted my intro thread I went on to read quite a few threads in various forum sections. While I was happily reading posts on one particular thread I saw in the signature area of one of the senior members a link to his orchid site. Curious I went over to "just have a look" and ~fell in love~ with all that he had to offer. Since I couldn't afford everything, I narrowed it down to 6 beauties. These are new species to me that I can't readily buy locally in my area.

Now I wait and hope that my orchid babies have not already been snatched up by someone else before I found them. I did get am email confirming the sale is pending. I know it is the weekend and the final sale will not take effect til next week. So, while I wait I shall flood my brain with as much info about the care of my new orchid kids as I can find. I'm confident I can find just about everything I need to know right here within these exceptionally knowledgeable walls from all of you super folks who have walked the path I'm heading down.

Good luck with the new purchases! Hope the ones you want are still there when the sale starts. Good on 'ya for having the will power to wait! Not my strongest suit.

Don't forget to show them off by posting pictures when you have enough posts here to do so (usually 5).

Thanks for the warm welcome PaphLover. I will definitely post pics when I get them in. I'm pretty sure I got all 6, checked the site this morning and the 2 that were only 1 available said "out of stock". The other 4 had more than one available when I ordered.

I have gotten better at waiting in my old age. Still not my best attribute either. My plans now will be to get busy saving for the greenhouse I want so badly. Have wanted one I could attach to my house for a long time. Now I have the best excuse.

Welcome De'Andrea to orchid board. This is a wonderful place to spend time. I do and have found it very helpful. I am also a dog lover and have 4 of them. Good luck with your new purses. I have been lately trying not to get any new ones as I am having a hard enough time taking care of what I have now.

Our neighbor use to live in West Texas before he moved back to Wyoming. I can't remember what town it was but he ranched there. He passed a little over a year ago at 97 he was a wonderful man.

Thanks Shannon, I agree this is a wonderful place to spend time. And being new it will take some time to run out of things for me to read before it begins to repeat itself.

That could have been almost any place out here that your neighbor lived. He certainly was blessed with a long life. There is still quite a bit of ranching going on down here. I live in the boring part with mostly cotton & wheat fields all around me. Not my favorite scenery.

I do envy you living in Wyoming. One of my most favorite states to go through when my hubby drove an 18-wheeler over the road between 2000-2005. Me & our two old toy poodles rode with him. When my Mom died in 2001 we took her 14 yr old toy poodle along as well. He got to ride for two yrs before he died. He never quit looking for her tho when we would come back home. Actually all the Rocky Mountain states & lower western states were my favorite during those yrs. I always said when I was young I would one day live in Wyoming close the the Tetons, my most favored range. I did get to see them from the Idaho side which was about 100 miles away as we headed from Salt Lake City, UT up to High River, Alberta Canada. And getting to go through West Yellowstone was heaven to me since Yellowstone was always on my to do list too. During those yrs we called it our retirement vacation with pay and we got to go through all the lower 48 states, plus Ontario & Alberta, Canada. We managed to knock Alaska, Yukon, & British Columbia off our wish list when we went up to Fairbanks, AK for our son's wedding in 2008. I'm afraid Hawaii is not a possibility since I fear flying and equally fear deep water.

Thanks Helene, that is definitely true around here~~adding to the addiction.

Once I get the new kids in I will see about making a photo shoot of all of them.
