Hello from Chicago!!

I acquired my 1st orchid last year from the office. It is a white Phal. Not knowing what I was doing I have been misting the spike and I now have 2 large spikes with buds coming from the old spike at the crest. I bought a miniture phal. in bloom, to set beside her.

Couldn't help myself. Spotted a orange and red Cymbidium that I just had to have, on the coldest day of the year. Only one spike is flowering. The other has buds, but nothing. (see attached)

I also have a Phal. mini mark "Holm" in my office.

It better start getting nice out or my house will be filled with orchids. I am an avid outdoor gardener.

Wow! Welcome to the board. Chicagoland folks are joining in swarms it seems. That's really nice. You have a great Orchid supplier there in Oak Hill. Lots of us have used them in the past. Glad you chose to join the ranks.

Yes, I am trying to stay away from Oak Hill and Hausermann, but my husband did say he would take me after vacation.

I will probably have to let him pick one out.

I think he thinks I am a little nuts.

But he did help me pick out a stand for my Cym. Can I bring it outside when it gets warm out? It won't get much sun after the leaves come back on our tree in the front.

I also have a northeast corner of my sunporch I could put it there. It is too cold back there now.

I'm jealous... Oak hill is a great nursery and any orchid with 'hausermann' in the name is bound to be a beauty! Although I'm glad there are no great nurseries near me cause I would go broke! LOL. Wonderful plants to start with! The phals would probably do better indoors, but yes the Cym can go outside! They end to like partial shade and overall cooler growing. When it goes out you can leave it out till mid fall/early winter. It can take the 1st frost(yes all the the way to freezing), bring it in when you get a hard frost and it should start blooming again! Of course this may not be true for yours... I'm not absolute if yours is a warm tolerant Cym. Ask a little more in the Cymbidium forum for minor details...

Default Hell, you are viewing Oak Hill from a distance

You should see what it looks like close up! Plus, if you ever get a chance to see the owner speak, do so. One of the most knowledgable people I have heard.

Hi K and welcome to Orchidboard

That's a lovely Cym! They like it a little cooler than many other chids. I give mine as much sun as they can take without burning and although I can't always supply them with "cool" here in Florida, they are the only chids that stay outdoors on the nights we get low temps.

If you need help with anything, let us know
