Hello from Kentucky!
Default Hello from Kentucky!

Hello everyone!

I am a middle school teacher from Eastern Kentucky. I have been interested in orchids for well over a year and have read up on them in this amount of time. To be honest, I find caring for orchids a little intimidating! I have always wanted an orchid in my home office. Surprise! Today, my husband surprised me with one for Valentine's Day.

It's now or never! I can't wait to learn as much as I can about these beautiful plants!

Welcome! You teach middle school... how could anything else be intimidating? LOL.

You can do it, and lots of orchids aren't that hard.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new orchid! Don't be intimidated. It isn't that growing orchids is difficult, it's just much different from growing many other plants given their long life span and their epiphytic nature.

What kind of orchid is it? I'm guessing it's probably a Phalaenopsis, but if you're not sure you can post a picture and we can give you some tips on the proper care of whatever variety you have.

I'm glad you're having a good St. Valentine's day so far! I'm a bit jealous, as my husband half the time forgets that Valentine's day is even rolling around, let alone getting me an orchid for the occasion, lol.

Thank you, everyone! I am very glad I found such a wonderful online resource for orchid care. I am in the process of reorganizing my office space. My office sits in an area of my home with an eastern facing window. I will most likely set up a humidifier in this area when I am finished and keep my phal in this room. I believe the humidifier will be beneficial because we use an electric furnace to heat in the winter and the air can be very drying. Often times, I will use a humidifier for myself during the winter so I can imagine the orchid would enjoy it. I will post pictures later. It is a very interesting color and still has several buds that have yet to bloom. It has two flower spikes. Hopefully, this hasn't caused it too much stress.

Howdy from western Kentucky! In eastern kentucky there are Cypripediums, lady slipper orchids, that bloom in the spring. Have you ever seen them? I would love to go orchid hunting in the Appalachians.

Welcome. I teach in a middle school too and orchids are much easier! Once you get to know your plants, raising them becomes easy. Enjoy
