Default Hello everyone, I know nothing about orchids!

My name is Jerri and I love orchids but can't for the life of me keep them alive This evening I found myself at Home depot where I was supposed to be buying an apple tree...well one apple tree and an orchid later I found myself searching for orchid forums

This looks like a wonderful site and I will try using the search feature to find answers before I start asking a lot of newbie questions. This isn't my first orchid (I live about 20 minutes from Gubler's Orchids in Lander's CA) but it is the only survivor even if it has been in my possession for several hours, LOL...

I look forward to getting to know you all better and glad I stumbled on this site first as it looks fantastic! Thank you all in advance for any help you can provide and I can hardly wait to go look around your fantastic site!!!

Best wishes,
Jerri (AKA plumeriastix)

BTW - my orchid is a Den Red Emperor Prince, I'm going to call it Drep for short, LOL Oh, I also grow plumeria, got hooked on those in the summer of 2006 and now have about 150

Hi Jerri!

Welcome to the OB! There's never too many questions. Newbies like myself like to see what other people are asking and then file them away for future reference

Hope you enjoy it here!

Hi Jerri...you've come to the right place...

You're on a roll! You can now say you have an orchid in your care that is thriving Your new friends here will help you keep it that way...and maybe you'll start adding a few to the collection

I'd love to see some of your Plumeria...love them too! I started some from seed 3 almost three years ago and one of them bloomed this past summer! Along the way, friends have passed along some large ones that they had no space for so...the collection builds

Let us know if you need help with anything

Thank you all for the nice friendly welcome

khill - I think I need to stick with many, many plumeria and only 1 orchid I really hope I don't kill this poor thing

Hi Shams - thank you for the welcome and it's nice to know I'm not the only newbie here, maybe we can learn together?

Cb977 - Yes, it has now been thriving in my care for about 15 hours...so far so good Would love to see pics of your plumeria. If you are ever in need of a plumeria forum just let me know, I belong to several.

I forgot to tell you guys I also love the happy faces so I will drive you all nuts with those. How can a person not smile when looking at a happy face

I'm off to try and learn more about these beautiful plants in my quest to keep Drep alive. Thank you all again for the warm welcome

Dear Plumeriastix,

Welcome to the OrchidBoard!
You will have a blast here on this site; everyone will be very helpful will all questions. Maybe you could join your local orchid society. I have many plumerias of many different colors. Some I have had for 20 years. Probally have about 80 plumerias. Have some new ones from seed that should bllom this year. Lst year they were due but it rained everyday for two months solid in Houston, Texas so all the plumerias quite blooming.

Happy Growing!

Orchidexpress - thank you for the nice welcome I have been looking into orchid societies and cannot seem to find any in my area. All seem to meet at night during the week which makes it impossible for me to get there. My plumeria society meets on the weekend in San Diego which is wonderful as I can get out of this darn desert for a bit, LOL Would love to see some of your plumeria blooms. I am trying to start a small backyard nursery here as I became disabled due to a work injury...long story short, I am fixable but work comp ins. co. doesn't want to spend money on such things, go figure, LOL...

irphrog - absolutely love your screen name and your avatar. What a beautiful frog!

I try to keep my sense of humor up, it's about all that's gotten me through these last 3 1/2 years besides my plumeria and now hopefully orchids. I must say though, you all speak greek to me, LOL. I try to read the threads and wind up just shaking my head at times I haven't given up yet though

Thank you all again for the warm welcome

Dear Plumeriastix,

All orchid societies will be meeting in the evening during the week. I have one society, the fern society that meets on Sunday afternoons. Then I am also a member of the bromeliad society which meets on a tuesday night. Our society, the Houston Orchid Society, had a special newcomers group which would always meet the third Sunday mof the month at 2pm. All of our members are a newcomer for the first two years. I had several newcomers who did not drive at night and they were member and enjoyed receiving thier newletters and attending the newcomers meetings. I was the newcomer chairman two years ago. This year I am the plant raffle table lady.
Start growing some plumerias of different colors. Everyone has the yellow and white variety. Start growing the reds, pinks and corrals and them sell them later.

Good Luck
and
Happy Growing!
