Default Hello from Cincy Ohio

Hello, my name is Joe in hardiness zone 6a.

I'm a cat guy that loves cacti, bonsai, fungi and my betta fish.

I have a 16qt pressure cooker with gauge and solid sterilization technique.

I have a small lighthouse hydroponic grow tent as well as a kessil H380.

Anyone else into fungi or cacti?

Hi Joe--

Welcome to Orchidboard!

There are two active orchid societies in your area (Greater Cinci and Miami Valley), so hope you get to check them out.

If you have a hydro grow tent you might be interested in the semi-hydro grow section of this site--lots of members are growing their orchids in semi-hydro....Not something I've tried yet--I seem to have better success with mounts....

I've found this board to be both friendly and knowledgeable, so if you have questions feel free to ask!

Catherine

Hello and welcome to the forum. I use to really love cacti but now I only have 3 and one is not doing to well. Oh maybe 4 if you count a giant Jade as a sort of cacti. I'm not sure.

I think jades are considered a succulent. All cacti are succulents but not all succulent are cacti. I think that's the saying.

I don't have many cacti but all are over 5 years old.

Cacti are tricky in cold-winter climates. It's hard to give them enough winter light without a good light setup. They need strong summer light, but they're easy to sunburn in spring when transitioning outdoors after a long, dark winter, just like their owners. They're susceptible to spider mites, and people can have a hard time seeing mites on cacti. Many come from nurseries with unseen root mealybugs. They need to be watered thouroughly during warm weather, then dry out, so they need protection from excessive summer rain. Their pot size and soil mix needs to be chosen so it takes 5-7 days to dry out after soaking. They can be watered as soon as they dry out during warm weather. And they need monthly light fertilizing during warm weather.

In the winter many successful growers keep them under very bright lights with no water at all.

The jade plant is in the Crassula family, which includes hen-and-chicks. It needs Vanda light all year to be at its best. It will grow whenever water is available
