Hello from Silicon Valley!
Hi there!
I'm about a year into this hobby, I got a NOID phal as a gift on a first date a year ago yesterday...given my history with plants, I started reading up on orchid care and how I could keep the little thing alive.
Well, I repotted it after it was done blooming and apparently I've done something right because it positively EXPLODED with root growth and right now it's heavy with buds and looks to be about a week from blooming again!
Since getting that first phal, I've discovered that if people find out you like orchids they will bring you their neglected, dying orchids to try and revive. I'm currently up to six phals, three of which were given to me to save.
I'm actually enjoying the challenge and getting a lot of pleasure from watching their leaves plump back up and roots start poking around their pots...
Anyways, I was excited to stumble across this board and I look forward to learning more!

Yes yes yes. Make it known that you like orchids. I have been offered so many, out of bloom and abused orchids to experiment with. It's great!

My word, yes! I had 4 phals and felt comfortable with that number, because I was moving on to paphs and had it to my ears with phals. I told one person and the next time I saw that person she had 11 phals of all kinds of decrepitude in boxes ready to move to my car. I noticed most of them had nice pots, so I took them. Always get a nice pot out of the deal! I am now overrun with bloom spikes-- most white because she liked those dyed blue phals. Oh well, white is nice.
