Hello, my name is Rosie and I am from Barbados. I love orchids and I am very interested in cultivating them. Any ideas for a beginner would be welcome.

Welcome to Orchid board. Most people start with phalaenopsis orchids because they are sold so many places and the flowers last a long time. Do you have any orchids now? If you do, I would read everything you can about the type you have or are interested in.

Welcome to OB! Glad to have you with us!

I started with Phalaenopsis orchids, but I don't always think that they are the easiest. I also like Maxillarias and Oncidiums. Actually, at this point I have quite a mix.

If you would like ideas about different orchids, just let folks know what kind of light, temp, and humidity you have and where you plan to grow them. I am sure many will chime in with suggestions of their favorites.

Be forewarned!!!! Orchids can be very addictive!!

Phalenopsis, Oncidiums, Phal Dendrobiums , Vandas would fare well in the climate. You'll have the added bonus of being able to grow outside all year round.

Welcome Rosie! I also didn't find phalaenopsis easy at the beginning. Try various orchids and you'll see which ones are best for you - more the merrier!

Hi, Rosie, and welcome. I visited Barbados many years ago. It is beautiful, and the people are so friendly.

There are a lot of orchids native to the Caribbean islands. Start with those and branch out from there. Look up Tolumnia species and hybrids. (These used to be known as equitant Oncidiums.)
