Hello from Brooklyn!
Default Hello from Brooklyn!

Hi everyone!

I just recently started growing orchids last summer, with my first one being a rescued phal from the supermarket around the corner, and my second one another rescued phal from a farmers' market (I see a trend here, LOL) .

Then I found a different table at the same farmers' market and bought several plants from there; these ones weren't rescues. From this table, I got a paph hybrid; a small mounted one called a "Cherry Blossom"; and a zygopetalum who was kind of sickly, I'm still nursing that one back to health... She put up some new growth though, so I have my fingers crossed.

Also, in the small hours of this past morning, I flasked my first orchid pod! (From the second phal I got.)

As for me: I'm currently getting my Ph.D in physics, although my research is mostly computer programming based, which I enjoy. Aside from orchids and science, I love cats; reading; tea & coffee; crosswords, Sudoku, etc.; anime & manga; soccer; baseball; learning languages; and Dance Dance Revolution. I also collect action figures, draw, do photography, and design/make/tailor clothes.

P.S., Does anyone else name their plants? Mine are, in order of mention: Vox Vulgaris, Decameron, Guillaume de Machaut (or Lilla for short), Distaff, and Copernicus. And I have a spider plant named Shaggy Jim.

Welcome to Orchidboard. There are people here who name their orchids. I am not one of them but I do feel a connection with my plants without giving them a name.

Welcome! It is not abnormal to name your 'chids. I personally don't, mainly because I don't want to get too attached.. because reasons. Otherwise you're home free!

Welcome to Orchid Board

I do name my plants but far more boring names than you. If they have a registered name I use that, but if they don't I name them something either descriptive (e.g. White Frills) or something similar, but not quite the same as a named orchid that it's similar to.

Hubby gives some of them other names. For example 'Lemming' for one of my phals which at one point had fallen off the self multiple times.

Haha, thanks. Yep, I named him that because spider plants look like shaggy hair to me.
