Smile Hello from a new member!

Hello all. My name is Kim and I’ve been reading around the site for a little while, trying to get my feet under me. I recently moved back in with my mother to help around the house, she has arthritis and needs help every now and again, and I’ve some how ended up with the job of taking care of all of the plants. This includes the six orchids that she has.

(I’m assuming here that if the tag has one name over the other that means it’s a cross)

She has three Phals: a Phal. Sara Lee Eye Dee x Phal. Brother Victory B#1 AM/AOS, a Phal (Morning Moon x Musashino) x Phal Joseph Hampton, and a Phal Pinlong Memory.

She has a Paph Karol Wojtyla. She did have two NOIDs, but while watering other plants this morning, I discovered a tag for one of the NOIDs. It’s a Zygo. Syd Monkhouse. The other NOID is I believe an Oncidium.

The Zygo is having issues and I’m going to be popping over to the pests and diseases thread to post pictures just as soon as I can get my camera hooked up to the computer.

I’m looking to get a Vanilla Planifolia soon. I’m a baker by trade (I own my own bakery) and I love to dabble in how things are made. I’ve ground my own flour, grown my own berries for desserts, and I would love to try my hand at vanilla beans. I’ve found several for sale online but I’m leery about buying an orchid this time of year and having it shipped to Northern Virginia.

Erm, that was awful long so I’ll say bye for now. Thanks.

Hi! And, actually that's not the longest post I've read so far, so go for it! Rule number one: We love photos! Rule number two: Most of us love to cook and eat and compare recipes. So's I think we have a match here Houston! Lookin' forward to helpful tips on baking, etc. as well as discussions on orchids. I'm REALLY glad you're here, Kim. BTW (By the way) Marty is quite a recipe fiend himself. Marty is the board admin.

Hi, Ross. Pictures huh? Well here's a picture of the orchids and a few other plants in my mom's kitchen garden window.

Starting at the left side of the top shelf is the NOID that I believe is the oncidium. Next to it is a jalapeno plant and next to it is the Paph. At the bottom starting from the left is the Zygo, behind it you can barely see the pot for one of the Phals. The other two phals are next to the first phal. Then there are the two african violets hiding behind the hand lotion bottle and in the front of all that is my little jade tree.

You have any questions about baking and I'm your girl.

Hi Kim

Great introduction! Seems to me you've hit your stride! Love the picture of the garden window. I had one of those up in New York and loved it...although I wasn't growing orchids at that time

If you need help with anything, let us know

Hi Kim. My just about favorite thing, after orchids, is cooking. I love fiddling around with ingredients too. I grow most of my herbs, and will try anything at least once. I think you are going to have a great time here!

Kim (yup, another one. Male though.)
