Hola from Nicaragua
Hola from Nicaragua, I'm developing an interest in raising orchids with an eye to exporting to North America. I'm really looking forward to learning a lot from the members of this site. When I have begun my collection I'll be sure to post images. My particular interest is in propagation - it seems very complicated when compared with other types of plant propagation. gracias

Welcome to the Orchid Board. Do you currently export other types of plants?
I think you are our first Nicaraguan member.
Thanks for joining!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm heading up to the northern part of the country next week, where I understand there are more orchids to be found. I'll take plenty of photos of what I find and perhaps the board can help me ID those.
gracias.

My first newbie question. Is there an ideal temp, light, humidity, watering for orchids or is there such a diversity that it really depends on the particular varietal? In a rainforest where would you most likely spot orchids - near the ground or in the upper branches near the light?

Hola Casa Silas, bienvenido al OB (yo soy original de Venezuela),
as per your question... the diversity is quite high, and so are the conditions to grow the chids. It not only depends on the genus but also on the species and sometimes even the sub-species and/or the variety. check where you plant originally comes from, and you will have a better idea how to grow it (some can be tricky anyway, C. lueddemaniana prefers cooler temps in captivity than in the wild!)
and where to find them? depends also on the ecosystem... but in tropical rainy/cloud forest you will prbably find most of them on branches...

Gracias kavanaru, (yo soy original de Canada ; )
I'm hoping here that I can find some that will thrive though because we have an extensive dry season here I'm sure some artifical humidity may be necessary. I'll post my findings and fortunes here when the time comes. adios
