Default New orchid grower

Hi everyone!
My wife was given a phalaenopsis for her birthday two summers ago and it has bloomed beautifully twice since then. My interest in orchids is growing and I'm getting pretty excited about them - well, enough to buy another one just a month ago - a dendrobium.

What has actually inspired me to join the board is that the phal is having kids ... well, sort of. A keiki is developing on the flower spike. I'm pretty happy about that and so I thought I would join the board and learn a little more about these pretty little plants

Welcome aboard, Gene. A keiki is a good sign. Means you're doing something right. Jump right in and have fun.

Hi Gene,
You are where I was a year ago, All it takes is to rebloom an orchid and WHAMO, If your looking to add to your collection, check out Ebay (this is not a promo but I've had a lot of fun on there) you can check out an orchid on there ,then google the name to learn more about it. I picked up a lot of info that way, not to mention buy, buy, buy. beware It is very addicting .
good luck, Deborah

Hi Gene...welcome to Orchidboard

It happens rather quickly...especially when you hang out on Orchidboard! The more you see, the more you learn...and the more you hafta have!

We've got a great community here with folks from all around the world, at all stages of their addiction, growing in a large variety of conditions...all willing to help each other along. You'll love it here

As Deborah suggested, ebay has lots of orchids for sale. You should really do your research and check out our Vendor Feedback section prior to ordering from just anybody there. While there are many very good vendors, unfortunately there are always going to be those that you'd be better off avoiding. If you see something you like, post a question at OB and if any of us have experience with that vendor, good or bad, we'll let you know. There are a number of vendors available, with web sites, in Canada too. Three that I know of are Paramount Orchids, Cloud's Orchids and Orchids In Our Tropics. I have no first-hand knowledge of them since I'm not up there, but our members have posted information about them so you can just do a search here and see what they had to say.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask

I've been looking at Ebay orchids and there are actually much better prices elsewhere. I'm going to try to hold off until after I go to my area club orchid show at the end of the month, but I thought I'd try Aloha Orchids after that. Their prices seem much better-- 4" pots w/ mature/in-bloom/in-spike plants for about half the price of most. (No, I don't work for them, but I'm drooling over some of their orchids!)
