New orchid addict
Last year my wife gave me a phalenopsis as a Valentines Day gift, knowing that I love growing different plants (roses, perennials, vegetables, etc.). Immediately fell in love with the plant, but was concerned that they were too difficult to grow. March went to an orchid growing clinic at the local nursery and purchased a nice oncidium . We decided that we would not purchase any more until we determined that we could successfully grow them.... Well that idea only lasted a very short while. We kept seeing orchids that we had to have; now we have 13 orchids. Phals, dendrobium , Oncidium, Bulb, Cats, Miltonopsis, and mastevelia (hope the spelling of these names are close to being correct).
All were doing well for the summer as I kept them outside on our deck under a 12-foot umbrella. Now I'm trying to see how they grow in my family room with a 125-watt compact fluorescent. So far everything seems to be okay, but growth is now very slow, I think I may need another bulb for sufficient light.
Anyway, I love the different orchids and watching them grow, guess I'm addicted. Want to buy more but I think it would be wise to see how they grow indoors.

What you have is known here as OAD...Orchid Acquisition Disorder
What your new friends here at OB are known as: Enablers-R-Us
With so many beautiful orchids to look at, it's only natural to want that one...and that one...and that one
Check out our forums on lighting, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. You've made a smart decision in waiting to see how your 'chids adjust to your winter conditions. By spring, you'll know what renovations you need to do in order to make them all happy
We'd love to see some of your collection.
and if you need help with anything, just ask

Welcome to the Orchid board. Glad you joined. Phalaenopsis orchids are most often the first orchid. Hook, line and sinker. Hehe

I believe there is a cure for OAD, but it is not conventional by any means. This new cure only masks the symptoms, as OAD is a permanent condition. The technique is simple:
1. Get car keys and money
2. Drive to nearest orchid supplier
3. Drool all over orchid tables
4. After discovering you want them all, pick the purdiest one in there.
5. Drive home and spoil the thing rotten!
Warning: This cure is not intended for anyone under the age of three years old. Consult your orchid supplier for dosage information. Common side effects are euphoria, big smiles, and a show off attitude. Please be careful, notify your orchid supplier if your desires are becomming stronger than normal; you may need to treat your OAD again as soon as possible.
