Just buy few and see if you can grow them, if there is success then buy more... . That's what I did. I killed my first two phals like 12 years ago. My mom gave me big white moth orchid past May, it was success, end up having 9 orchids(4 dif kinds). Good luck!!!

Yes, $100 orchids are out of my price range. I will probably buy some at Trader Joe's when I go again. And if I am lucky, they will be labeled.

If I stick to $20 orchids, I can afford 5 times as many deaths.

Welcome to Orchid Board

Glad you are giving it another go. I've not killed all mine yet but they've had a lot of neglect recently and I've lost some. I think mine are only still alive because hubby has done most of the watering over the last few months!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I half expected someone to give me a hard time about abandoning my orchids outdoors for the winter.

I'm a newbie but I have found everyone to be so nice here. They really make people feel at home.

Hello, Plantluvver! We have in common the African Violet struggle...my Gramma was a whiz with them...and all I can do is watch them die. Sad.

My dad had the most beautiful cymbidiums in California, and now that I'm in Florida, there are not so many warm growers to choose from...I just acquired one at a plant sale and am hoping for good things.

I always have to remind myself, being pretty new at this, that they can be killed with kindness a lot quicker than with neglect!

As for me, phals really are pretty easy, and the Cattleya are too, but they like a bit more light than phals...the pay-off with Cattleya is there are SO many varieties that are fragrant, I've fallen in love with them. And I have one Brassavola Nodosa, which is super fragrant only at night, and really easy to grow.

Welcome to your new addiction.

Went to Trader Joe's today. The shelves of orchids had a lot of empty space. And from what I could see, the orchids did not have tags with the names. I did find a 'Sharry Baby' for 12.99. So I came home with that.
