Default Hello from Minnesota!

Found this lovely board and learning tons from reading here the last few weeks.

I run a permanent greenhouse for a local college and know very very little about Orchids. I've been here for 6 months and actually had some lovely blooms. Somehow I've only killed one or two, but they were quite sick anyways.

If you can imagine, I have 210!! orchids. 2 have ID's. Quite a daunting task to identify them all. I would be pleased just to have their first name

Right now I have close to 20 spikes and waiting to see what pops to post pictures.

14 inches of snow on Monday so I am glad i am inside the greenhouse this winter.

Happy blooming! MNBloom

btw, my avatar is one that is in bloom right now.

to OB . Glad you joined us. Nothing like blooming orchids inside when the weather is cold outside.

I am looking forward to the your visits to the Identification board.I've been to Minnisota, to St. Paul. Beautiful country, especially at the Mississippi headwaters. Do you have native orchids there? Seems likely. The harsh winters are legendary, but also the landscape is magnificent or was back when I went there!

There are several that grow here. Lady Slipper and Yellow Lady Slipper being the most well known.

I've only seen the Lady Slipper in bloom once in the wild, but several Yellow Ladys.

You get used to the winters most of the time.

Welcome to the board. As you get to know each of the orchids you will be surprised by the beauty as much as all you learn so fast from being here about each one. Remember to take pictures as they bloom and if you find their seed capsules on the orchids remember to harvest their seeds after they ripen especially if you like that orchid. I am sure others here would love some seeds. As the capsules begin to ripen just take a coffee filter and place it around the seed capsule and staple the coffee filters corners all around but remember not to staple you fingers or the capsule. This will collect any seeds from blowing away once the capsule splits. Enjoy our orchid board and I hope to see some pictures of the orchids where you are working soon. Have a great day...
