Question new to orchid board - need help

I have always loved gardening and especaillly plants in the house. Now that I live in Mexico I have year round flowers in the yard. One of these plants is an orchid - surprise, surprise - the leaves look live a palm and that is what I thought it was until it started blooming in October. I have just harvested the seed pod and have a small bag of fine powder - what do I do now? I would love to start another plant to share with a friend but have no idea how. I did plant some orchid seeds about a year ago and the plant is healthy but I have no idea how to handle the fine powder from the plant that is blooming now.

Can anyone recommend a good orchid book - likely for varieties that grow wild in Mexico??

For information about species orchids,

Orchid Book Page

has a good list of orchid books:

An Introduction to the Orchids Of Mexico, By Andrew Wiard, Published by Comstock Cornell

Icones Orchidacearum Fascile 1, Orchids of Mexico Part 1, By Hagsater & Salazar

A good introduction to starting orchid seeds - called flasking, is here:
