I have found a need to ask an orchid question for the first time in quite a few years now.
That's why I've joined this forum.

I began growing orchids in my living room about 1998 while living in Alaska.
I kept upwards of 75 of the little beggars growing in the windows of my condo, a very full time job. I finally began to specialize in cool-dry- rest Dendrobiums, especially, the large pendent species.
I sold the condo, moved into a less sunny place and then caught a spider mite infestation. I fought it for almost a year and lost the war. In mid winter I gathered them all up and threw them into the dumpster. At 20 below they were frozen in minutes. I have not kept an orchid for over 5 years.
After almost 35 years in Alaska I have moved to Hawai'i. I am beginning to get back into orchids again.
I am really hooked on the prospect of growing them in my yard.

Hawaii does sound a better prospect for growing orchids ...

So you are working your way to all fifty states? LOL, welcome to the Forum! You are so fortunate to be in such a lovely place as Hawaii AND be an orchid hobbyist. Can't wait to see what your first or second or third or....orchid will be--you have so many choices.

Thanks for the welcome people.
@WhiteRabbit
Yes. It is a much better prospect.

@MattWoelfsen
I have already acquired many "new-to-me" orchids.
Somewhere while setting myself up here, I included a link to my online photo album. The section Titled "Our Yard" has pics of most of the orchids that were here already and the ones that I've acquired since being here. That section is an ongoing work constantly being updated as new ones are brought in and as they bloom.

@Leafmite
Yeah, most of our friends back in Alaska are envious as they think of the approaching winter. First frost isn't all that far away right now.

Welcome to Orchid Board

Orchids should grow really well for you in Hawaii. Just shows, once you are hooked on orchids you'll come back to them one day
