Hello from snowy NE Ohio

South of Youngstown to be more exact. It is nice to find a great web site comunity of orchid enthusiest. Our orchid obsession started about 15 years ago while we live near Atlanta with a Den from Home Depot. Now we have Dens, Cats, Phals, Onc, Cym and something new this year, a Phrag. 5 years ago we move back to Ohio. Just wanted to say Hello.

Sounds like you've got a nice collection going. We'd love to see some pics and hear more about how you're growing them. Do you have a greenhouse or are they indoors or in a terrarium?

Well, we got to the point that our living room was being taken over by the orchids so over the summer we built a 10x14 detached greenhouse. The transition to growing in a greenhouse instead of the living room is what recently lead me to this board. I wish I had found it sooner. I've already learned much from browsing the forums. I think I have attached some photos of what we have in bloom in the house. The Brassolaelia 'Yellow Bird' is blooming very nice this winter and I just noticed more flower spikes on the way. There is somewhere close to 55 buds/flowers on it at the moment. The other is an unknown cat and brassia. I bought the brassia at Lowes last year on discount and then talked them down even cheaper since it was out of bloom. What they did not see yet was the new spike from the new growth. This is the third time it has bloomed for me. We also have a few dens in bloom in the greenhouse but they are on ther way to being finished.

Your Yellow Bird is beautiful! I have that orchid and mine is currently blooming, but I had about five-six different flower spikes blast on me. Don't know why.

I worried about spike or bud blast when I moved it from the greenhouse to the house but lucky we lost nothing so far on any of the orchids. I try not to move the dens because I always seem to get bud blast, I even had some in the greenhouse this year.

I have a very small division of a Yellow Bird which is in bud right now...just one spike and 4 or 5 buds, I think.
Someday, when he grows up, maybe he'll look like yours!

Welcome to the OB Bill! I just love your Yellow Bird. I have a small division of one as well, I thought it's sheath was not going to produce anything and ruined the developing bud inside on accident earlier this fall. It has since put up a new growth, but no signs of any new sheaths as of yet. I can't wait until mine grows to the size of yours someday!
