Default ...and another obsession begins!

Hi all!

My name is Scott, and I am brand new here. I have recently begun to indulge my enamoured obsession with mounted mini orchids.

So far, I have 10 or so. (all from Andy's Orchids; so far, top knotch quality and amazing customer service). I have incorporated them into a wall display. I will be posting a couple of pics in the mini's forum, if anyone is inclined to look.

Of course, I have done all of this, with minimal background research, so...let the learning curve begin.

If anyone has any recommendations for quality books (I'm old school...plus I Love books), I would love to hear them.

Thanks in advance!

Scott

I love my books too! Welcome to the very addictive hobby of orchids!!

You found a great vendor for mounted orchids...any orchids really. Another great one for minis specifically is J&L Orchids in CT...they specialize in minis. And, you're just in time...they'll be having their annual customer appreciation sale later this month. Check them out..

As for books on minis...I only have one and it's pretty good. It gives good culture info and states the level of difficulty for each plant...which is always a good thing to know.
Miniature Orchid by Steven Frowine.
It is more geared around hybrids than species...I don't know if that matters but thought I'd mention it.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Katrina! As well as the recommendation for the book. I will look it up.

As far as "what matters; species/hybrids"...I'm not sure...I'm new. Haha...!

Is it just a matter of preference? Is it a very polarizing opinion?

Hi Patricia 420-

Unfortunately, I cannot give much advice...I am very new to this stuff.

However, from my limitied amount of reading, I have surmised that planting medium is often very specific to the genus of plant, and over watering/under lighting seems to be a beginner's common mistakes.

Here's to wishing us success!

Yep...just a personal preference kind of thing. Some people tend to have a very strong affinity toward one side or the other and then w/other people it really doesn't matter either way.

Welcome to Orchid Board

Yes, species or hybrid is personal preference... and then folks like me have a mixture of both.

Welcome to the board, Scott!! I love miniature orchids and books too. Some other great books on miniatures would be , A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species (volumes 1 and 2).

Thank you RosieC, White Rabbit, and nikkik!

A "compendium" "volumes 1 & 2"... Sounds juicy, thank you for that...I will definitely check it out.

Incidentally, I tried to make a post in the "minis" forum, and post was denied. I tried to insert a couple pic links from photobucket. What could I be doing wrong?
