Hello!
So happened to stumble upon this forum from some lovely Google researching on trying to revive my poor Phal orchid. Have read up on a lot of valuable information and hoping I can save it! It holds a great deal of sentimental value.

A bit about me, I am 24 years young, born and raised in Southern, CA. I have always taken a great liking into plants and having the desire to one day have my own garden to dedicate my spare time to and relax. When it comes to orchids, they have always fascinated me and I have wanted to own one for quite some time.

My first orchid was purchased by my boyfriend some time last year and it had unfortunately died... Shortly after he had purchased me a second, a three tier beautifully bloomed Phal orchid and now it seems to be going down the same downward spiral as my previous and I am desperately trying to save it, so here I am digging around at threads trying take the proper steps to do so.

Hello!
I'm also here in SoCal.

Dig around.... there's lots of great advice to be had here.
For now though.
Describe your phals state.
And after 5 posts put up a picture of it.
Leaves are important but don't forget a shot of the roots!

This is my Phals current state,
As of current, I have two short stems that I had cut off to the shortest node on the bottom of the stem due to the remainder of the stem being dead. I HAD one healthy green stem remaining (with no flowers) and now it has browned and dried out. The orchid did have 3 lush green leaves but those have all fallen off. I noticed that the crown of the leaf had yellowed some and when I went to grab the leaf it just fell off with ease.

So now I am left with a Phal orchid with no leaves, two short stems about an 1 1/2 in. tall and one tall brown, dried out stem.

I have now discovered that the pot in which I have my orchid in is way too big and the sphagnum moss I have atop is a no-no. Also too, I do not have it potted in orchid mix/bark, it's potted in an indoor mix by Miracle Gro, so I am assuming this isn't helping either.

I did PM a member here and got some valuable feedback but any other advice is welcomed.
I will be visiting Lowe's today to purchase a smaller/clay pot along with Orchid bark to repot it. I am crossing my fingers that the roots are still salvageable.

Welcome!!

Rooting (pun not really intended but I like it) for your Phal!! Don't take it too hard, we have all lost an Orchid or 2 or more. Best thing to do is learn from mistakes and keep the next ones alive from your experience!

Best of luck!

Thank you to all.

I had a question. Is there a thread that illustrates HOW a proper repotting should look like?

Hmm. Sounds like you might need a new orchid lol.
But it could throw out a basal keiki if it has healthy roots. But it also might just die.

I believe one of our members did post a thread on repotting recently.
