Not only am I a newbie to orchids, but to forums as well, so I am feeling a little tentative.
I was just recently given an orchid. My helpful son somehow removed the helpful note on it that said what it was. It has three or four flowers that are pinkish purple in color, broad flat green leaves at the bottom of a long stem. Can anyone identify it for me and tell me something about caring for it. I would like to keep it alive.

Hi and welcome to Orchidboard

I'm guessing you most likely have a Phalaenopsis which is the type we commonly see in stores. If you could possibly show us a picture of what you have, we can give the correct advice. Going on the assumption that you have a phal, they like indirect, filtered lighting.
Here's a sheet to help you:

We have lots of folks here just starting out in orchids. Many of them were also a little tentative about getting involved in our forum but they've all become familiar with the forum and they are an asset to our community. I'm sure you'll feel just as comfortable in a short time

If you have questions, feel free to ask

Welcome to the Orchid Board. Not to long ago I was a complete newbie to forums and such. This place is just so friendly that I visit everyday.
