Hi Everyone! I've been lurking around for awhile, thought it's about time to introduce myself. I'm a North Carolina native, transplanted to South Florida a few years back. Although I don't grow orchids, I'm a sculptor and have spent many hours trying to capture the "magic" of these beautiful flowers in my orchid jewelry. I'm hoping by rubbing e-elbows with many of you, some of that "magic orchid dust" will rub off and find it's way into my jewelry. I'd love to hear from any of you who have ideas or suggestions!

Thank you Susanne! I have a lot of question. I will be trying to find out why I murdered my first Orchid plus I'll be posting a question about a Black Orchid...is there such a thing? Also Cattleya Orchid is by far my favorite orchid to sculpt but I just completed a Phalaenopsis because of it popularity...is there a true "favorite" orchid?

My first Orchid to sculpt...

I'm a stickler for accuracy, that's one reason I have lurked for so many years just looking at all the beautiful orchids that were posted.

I sculpted this Potinara Susan Fender Orchid which was found on the front cover of the book, The World's Most Beautiful Orchids put together by Greg Allikas & Ned Nash while visiting our Orchid Society in Boca Raton.

This Orchid caught my eye several years ago because of the velvet ripples in the lip or labellum and to me, it is the most beautiful orchid in the world.

I'm seriously thinking about sculpting a Paphiopedilum aka Slipper Orchid.

Gorgeous!

LOL...everybody has a personal favorite...some of us have dozens of favorites

I'm not sure about a Black Orchid but if one exists, somebody here will probably know about it

A sculpted Paph! Now, that would be awesome!!!

Here is my Phalaenopsis, it's still in wax but you can see the detail I've taken from photos.

...just imagine it in Sterling Silver.

I'll post the question about the Black Orchid, I'm sure I'll find out now.

Dawn,
WELCOME!
Your sculpted flower and wax Phal are just gorgeous! I don't know how long you have been "hanging around", but I wonder if you knew Mickey Nax before she passed away. She did the most wonderful work in gold of orchids. Before her husband, David, passed away, he donated the majority of her work to the Huntington in California. If you ever happen to be in the LA area, make sure that you visit the Huntington Gardens and see her gold orchids first hand.

For two years Jerry...I was in search for good photos with good information about them.

Just so happens my husband is from California, and he suggested I sculpt my first orchid...I had no clue what an orchid really looked like. His Mom is from Hawaii, so the orchid was a common flower to them. I'll do a search on Mickey Nax, I'd love to see what she has done. I'm so glad you mentioned her, I love seeing other people's work...Was that the Huntington Library?
