Default Hello from Scotland.

Hi everyone,

My name is Jim. I live in Scotland UK.
I have decided to dip my toes into this great hobby.
I am recently retired, by coincidence as a Horticulturist. However I do not pretend to have any specialist knowledge of Orchids.
Since I was a student back in the day at Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens, I have always had a notion to grow and collect Orchids. Now that I am retired I will hopefully realise my ambition.

I already have some small numbers of Phalaenopsis,Cymbidiums, Miltassia and Oncidiums. All of which I am growning initially in my home, space permitting.

As my Orchid Acquisition Disorder (OAD) progresses I hope to acquire a small greenhouse and start to dabble in other genera eg, Dendrobium,Cattleya,Vandas and Paphiopedilum.

As for the future, well who knows how serious this OAD can become

I hope to learn through both dialogue with the members of this great forum and reading up on as much Orchid specific literature as I can acquire.

So please bear with my newbie entry level and inexperience.

Kindest regards
Jim

Welcome Jim! Glad you joined us here. I think we all develop OAD, some of us just have it chronically!

Of the ones you're considering, I'd highly recommend the Dendrobiums - I've fallen head over heels for these, especially the miniature ones! I'd also point out Coelogynes. There is a wonderful variety of them at nurseries here in the UK and Europe, many of them are cool growing which is a big plus for me, and they have the most beautiful pseudobulbs.

Anyway, welcome again, and if you have any questions about anything - let us know!

Check out some of the stuff tghe grow at the Eric Young Foundation. I think that you might be able to purchase some of their stuff now. I have seen shows about that place. What an interesting place that seems to be.

Welcome, Jim.

OAD- finally it's diagnosed. I wondered how 20 of these plants would up all over my house in a month. It's like "Night of the Triffids," especially with that new paph.

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately there is no cure for OAD, it eventually leads to Bankruptcy

Jim
