Hello from Virginia
I am Erica from Virginia. I am a newly married, 24 year old, orchid lover. My parents and grandparents fostered my love of plants and orchids spoke to me the most. I did FFA all through high school and it was at this time that I bought my first phalaenopsis orchid. I have tried a few other kinds, but stick to the phals. Simple and so rewarding. The light in my home seems to be good for them but not for higher light orchids. SO.. just about every flat surface near a window is covered in phals with a few regular houseplants thrown in for good measure. My significant other usually treats me to an orchid on major holidays. I always tell him I would rather have an orchid that will rebloom for me than some roses that will die.

Welcome! I'm new to the orchid world and this has been a great place to get some really good help and info. I've got 5 phals, and one of them is growing my first ever phal spike, so, yeah, I like phals too.

I'm sure we can introduce you to some other orchids likely to do well in the same conditions as Phals, if you are interested
If not, that's fine too!

I have some paph orchids too. And they have bloomed for me, but they just dont have the same appeal. That and the stinkbugs that are infesting Virginia lately seem to like sleeping in the paph leaves. More places to hide. Ugh. -Specifically I have Paphiopedilum Strawberries 'n Cream (Oriental Enchantment 'Green Envy' x Telstar 'Orbit') and Paphiopedilum Judge Philip (philippinense 'Yellowstone' x pinnochio flavum 'Yellowtail').

Welcome to the Orchidboard! I am in full agreement about receiving an orchid instead of roses, it's the gift that keeps giving.

Hi Erica! I'm from VA too, where do you live? I'm in Norfolk. I saw you posted you were 24 in 2013 so we are around the same age- I turned 27 on Saturday. It's nice to see there are younger orchid collectors/ growers like myself as all my friends think I have an orchid problem! I just joined OB last week but have been collecting for a couple years now. I share your sentiment of preferring orchids over roses =) hope your growing is going well
