Now I have windows!
Hi everyone,
I fell in love with orchids nearly 20 years ago...just like most 9 year old boys. Anyhow, I still remember that my first orchid, a no ID pink veined Phal was like $40.00. My mom gave me space for two plants and my second Orchid was a $60.00 no ID Paph. These prices sound ridiculous huh?
I successfully rebloomed them for years until I went to college. Not enough light in a Dorm. Needless to say my mom killed them. Out of the next three places I lived none had sufficient window space or light in the south or east direction. Odd construction, trees and neighboring buildings thwarted me.
Finally, I was able to buy a house of my own two years ago, one that came equipped with a southeasterly sunroom! The sun room juts out in such a way that that I have three walls with windows. I'm now up to 10 orchids. While I feel that I have the Phal and Paph thing down, everything else brand new. And now that I have different phals I'm really noticing that they are all different. I plan on asking many questions as I tend to obsess a bit. So...hello to all.

Welcome Troythediver. Yes, in the "good old days" orchids were so much more expensive. I still marvel that I can get fully mature, in bloom, Phalaenopsis for less than US$14.00. Good luck with your re-start back into orchids!

It sounds like we have a similar setup; I have a solarium that is all windows, except for where it is attached to the house. When we bought our house windows were a major thing. Since I had the proper lighting and space for my orchids my addiction took control and now my collection is into a three digit number *sigh*. Oh well, there's worse things I could be addicted too!

You should look into oncidiums. I got into orchids, because my daughter brought home a NOID phal for me, so that I don't kill her orchids when she goes off to college in a couple of years and I've found that I REALLY love them since I picked up Oncidium Sharry Baby (I got lucky and got it for 12$ at the hardware store!) a few weeks ago. Now, whenever I see one, I have to stop and look at it. I've got like six of them on my wish list. Your sun room sounds like it might be a great place for a couple of oncs!
Welcome to the board!

Thanks for the welcoming everyone!
RandomGemini, I already am on my way. I've got two oncidium alliance no IDs. I wasn't sure if I was fully going to get back into orchid growing at first. I was just going to get ones that I liked regardless of the name. Two mini phals, two large phals, one dendrobium, and two oncidiums later, I moved on the named orchids, a Paph. a potinara, and an epicattleya (epc.).
