Hi I am Doug, I used to live in Florida a long time ago and used to have a bunch of orchids. After time, I learned they did a lot better when I left then outside in a proper lighting area then pretty much ignored them rather than trying to baby them inside!
Now I live in New York City and unfortunately that's not an option. I got back into them after seeing a phalaenopsis with particularly good roots and also having seen my neighbor throw away some orchids just because they went out of bloom! Now he knows to give them to me! I'm excited about getting back into them and one of the plants my neighbor gave me is already spiking again! I also bought a pink phrag online that's never bloomed before so I'm looking forwards to that.
Hello I'm Kevin. I'm a native New Yorker who recently moved to Puerto Rico. I would suggest you take a trip to Parkside orchid nursery. They are about 2 hours from NYC by the GWB. Located in a small town on the Pa border. They have a really good variety of established orchids. The countryside there is beautiful too!! I always went with my mom bought orchids and then spent the day by the river(good ol' times) I think its the Allegheny river, anyway its a beautiful shallow and wide river with cool water, and there are picnic areas along the banks. A couple antique shops and also a home made ice cream store just before the turn for the nursery. Its like a mini vacation with Orchids!!! Here I am on a tropical island 365 days of summer, 2 minute walk to blue water beaches, and I'm longing for the Pa countryside Their website is not much but their greenhouses are amazing!!!! Anyway go there you'll love the whole experience.
