Default I shall lurk no more...:)

Hi Everyone,

I found this board while doing a search for fans for my orchids. I am fairly new to the hobby, always thought of myself as having a "brown thumb". I bought my first orchid off of ebay, a cattleya 'First Love' because it wasn't too expensive and figured if I killed it, it would be a fairly inexpensive lesson learned. Well, I'm proud to report it is still with us and is currently in spike again. I laugh when I think back on how PETRIFIED I was when it first showed up in the "LIVE PLANT, OPEN IMMEDIATELY" box. I called a supervisor friend at work, who I had recently found out has been growing orchids since the 70's, and in a panic asked him "What do I do with it NOW!" I just knew I was going to kill it.... He was chuckling about my nervousness, and has given me lots of help with my plants.
I only have about a dozen plants, so far... My husband gave me a gift certificate to Akatsuka Gardens on the Big Island of Hawaii. We had gone there on a belated honeymoon year before last and I got to see the place firsthand! Truly amazing, so many beatiful orchids right in front of me. Even my husband was having a good time looking at and photographing all the gorgeous orchids.
I have installed a Tek5 light in the home office to increase my room. I currently am using the top of a roll top desk for some of my larger plants. The area in the kitchen was starting to look like a jungle...I used the gift certificate he gave me and am awaiting the newest arrival to my collection.

I'm looking forward to the fun and wealth of information on this board!
LuAnn

Welcome LuAnn! I am so jelouse of your Tek T5 light! I just bought a New Wave T5 light, the Tek was a little out of my range for what I was needing it for, a small orchidarium. Don't forget to share lots of pictures to get us through the winter!

Welcome to the orchid board. Great Introduction. Thanks for joining. I too used to think that orchids were something that I would never be able to grow. Hehe, oops, suddenly I have an apartment full of them. And they just won't die.

Default People who don't grow orchids

don't know how addicting they are-you have one or a couple and the next thing you know, you have hundreds. There is a guy in our society that has over 2,000. In his basement, he has 3 HID lights and 10 to 12 4x8 tables on wheels so that he can roll them around and water and fertilize them.
