New Member From South Florida Saying Hi
Hello all,
Long time Plant Head here, getting more into orchids now. I have some natives in the garden and a few others hanging around also.

Welcome to Orchid Board! You live in the perfect climate for orchids. There are many good orchid societies in South Florida and they welcome guests to attend meetings. There's also a large number of commercial growers in the area. Mostly in Homestead.

I live near Homestead. I know quite a few orchid people and I have orchids from some of the commercial growers here. I have collections of tropical fruit trees, palms, native plants and a lot of others. I have always resisted getting into orchids because of the expense (I am a compulsive plant buyer) but I see now its not really more expensive than my current plant addictions.

Welcome IncurablePlantHead, welcome to our obsession. I am in the Roads neighborhood in Miami and feel blessed we live in great orchid country. I have about 250 plants, mostly species and lots of NOIDs. What do you like to grow? How bad is your orchiditis?

Like all my plant addictions, it's probably going to be bad. I have only about 25 or so thus far. I like species also, but not opposed to any NOIDs either. I just got the biggest Onc. sphacelatum in the world 2 days ago. This guy grew it for 20-30 yrs and his son was vacating the estate. I had to back my pickup underneath it (hanging in a tree) and lower it onto my truck with a chain hoist. It was wider than the bed of my truck. It must weigh 200-300 or more LBS. I threw my back out getting it home and back up in an oak tree. I measured today 24 ft in circumference which averages 7.6 ft in diameter. Its truly a monster!

Welcome to the Board! You must post a picture. Once you get orchid-itis, you will wonder why it didn't happen sooner--especially living in southern Florida! Throwing your back out is a good sign its happening. LOL!

Wow. I would love to see pictures of that monster Oncidium! Ben-Gay for the back and a tall, cool drink to sit back and enjoy the new giant.
